Memory Foam Mattress Buying Guide: The Decisions That Matter

Understand memory foam feel, support, heat, motion and construction before buying.

Memory foam responds to pressure and heat, allowing it to contour around the body. But “memory foam” does not determine the whole mattress: firmness, layer thickness, density, support core and cover design all affect the result.

Strengths

Common advantages include pressure-relieving contouring and reduced motion transfer. Some sleepers, however, dislike a slower-moving feel or worry about temperature.

What to inspect

Look beyond marketing names. Compare comfort-layer depth, support-core design, total height, edge stability, ease of movement and trial terms. Then read foam vs hybrid and memory foam cooling.
